Speech Buddy Videos Ch 5

The best thing that all three of these speeches did was pick a subject that the audience can relate to. The speech about drinking was perfect for college students. After all I have heard it many times "I am in college it is time to party". I thought it was great that he addressed the statistics and the way it affects your health. He had good visual aids, and did not look down to much. I thought he could have worked on his volume and voice tone a little bit. The speech on light pollution needed more eye contact and she spoke to fast. The part she did right was making sure we knew the main points. For the volunteer speech I thought she did a great job she had a strong introduction and conclusion while also picking a subject directed to college students and made sure we knew how it would benefit us. Overall what I learned from these videos is first having a topic that everyone in the room can relate to is important, making sure to have a good introduction and conclusion, strong visual aids (otherwise the audience wonders why we even have them), and tone of voice and eye contact can make or break the enjoyment of watching a speech.

  1. Thank you for detailed analyzing of these videos. As for me all three videos are good, these guys did a big job to prepare their speech. I know that we can improve our speech also the time, it depends on how many times we tell the same speech, who is our audience, how do we feel people, and how does what I'm saying apply to me? I think that their speech was done very coherent with all parts: introduction, body speech and conclusion, and all transition between 3 parts was written very good. Also I like that I found for myself a slews interesting examples and statistics. The visual aid was good prepared especially in the volunteering speech, it helped me to comprehend her speech. Sometimes the visual aid can be distracted for speaker, because during the speech you can lose your order thoughts and be confused, but in the other side it can help us to plug the holes in our speech and nobody notice where we forget some part or what we lost. I am sure that we can use all these video as an example for preparation our topics for demonstration speech, and what was important for me that I will pick a subject that the audience can relate to and I will prepare a strong visual aids and try to have a good tone of voice and eye contact and I hope that breathing mechanic will help me to lessen my anxiety and panic.

  2. I have not watched the videos yet, but am glad to hear it is about something relatable! I can see how statistics could definitely back up his topic since there are many drinking statistics. Also, I find myself looking down at my note card when presenting my speech; that is something I can really work on. You mentioned that the other speaker was too fast but still got across her points in the speech. In the last culture speech, I did not seem to get my points across clearly. Even though I knew them and thought I was presenting them, looking back I can definitely see where people got lost. I should have narrowed my thesis a little bit more, but will try to perfect that problem next time.

  3. I find these videos are amazing at showing what we can do better or how we come off to others. When I am in front of the class, the last thing I think of is going to fast or looking down a lot. I go into a different world and all I can think of is sitting back down. These videos help me realize what I need to work on and just to relax because everyone is nervous. I feel the last speech went well for me, but I still feel there is a lot more things I could do to make my speech way better.

  4. Hmmm Brie...I missed the third video about volunteerism.
I agree that Matthew could have livened up his speech a tad bit. I know that he was giving a speech on a heavy topic, but still...some more enthusiasm would have made it more bearable.
Courtney's speech on 'Light Pollution' did not give us much to go on, but I agree that she could have slowed down and given more eye contact.
I will also do my best to prepare some strong visual aids and present something of interest to my audience.
