The first video for chapter 10 goes over using language to engage your audience. This can be done by putting language in context as in relating to what is currently going on whether that is referring to your audience or an event that happened on campus. Using personal language is the next one by using words like we, us, you, and I. Use inclusive language which means not using words people may not understand or may offend them. Use visual language which includes similes, metaphors, parallelism, rhymes, alliteration, and antithesis. It also goes over sparking imagination with language by asking the audience to visualize a story or idea. The second video for section 10.2 Talks about using effective language by using meaningful words, balance between clarity and ambiguity, be concise, avoid offensive language, build repetition, and don't get attached to your words. The first video for chapter 12 goes over delivery. Paying attention to volume, pitch, rate, avoid pauses, do not use monotone voice, and use good articulation and pronunciation. The next video goes over good delivery with eye contact, facial expressions, effective body movement, gestures, and appearance. The third video for chapter 12 goes over practicing your speech. You can do this by using your presentation outline and your note cards. They say you can practice your speech in sections. Practice in front of small audience and your confidence will be boosted. I though the most helpful part was that it talked about delivery and engaging my audience through language because I personally overlook that.

Self Evaluation Assignment #2

I thought that I did well in achieving my purpose of my speech. The purpose was to inform the class what the tough mudder was like and I felt that I was able to get through to them. I felt pretty confident and relaxed during my speech. Practice really does make perfect because it is getting easier the more I get up in front of people. I would have spent more time practicing before hand because I got a little bit to casual. I would organize my speech more in my outline and spend more time doing the PowerPoint. I wish I would have remembered to cite my sources! I always seem to forget. The goal I have to better improve my content is just more research. I will improve my delivery by practicing more before hand. The difference from my last speech was that I was not as nervous. I did not like using the PowerPoint because I feel like I end up getting into my PowerPoint and not focusing on the audience. The part that was bad and different was I said um and filler words a lot. That caused me and the audience to be distracting because I used to many filler words. I did not fidget a lot which was a huge improvement. I need to better improve my eye contact when I am using a PowerPoint, but I did feel I did a little better than last time with eye contact. Overall I would say my eye contact was about a six. I would give myself a B I did good but not awesome. I only mentioned one citation which was better than last time when I mentioned none but I need to cite four sources. Overall it was better than my last speech but there is still room for improvement and hopefully the next one will be even better than this one. Next time I plan on preparing further in advance so that way I am able to better focus on my organization and I can review it over and over. I had a lot of computer problems with this speech so that messed me up on having  enough time to fine tune my speech. I need to not use filler words, cite my sources, and just be more prepared. I kind of feel like it is impossible to prepare because once you are up there you can have practiced over and over and sometimes you just get to nervous and do a totally different thing than planned at least that is how it is for me. I will also try to just stay calm I felt relaxed but I did start to shake a little bit so hopefully next time I can shake that. I would really like to be able to just do one speech flawlessly so hopefully this reflection will help me better my next speech because I can see where I went wrong. I know that I will improve on my next speech and I hope that I do not make the same mistakes. I will focus on citing my sources and I will do much better research on my persuasive speech.

Presentation Media

Our responsibility for ethics in presentation media is to be aware of our audience. Not only must we be aware of what will speak to them most but also what will offend them.  you do not want to show a picture or video that will hurt your viewers feelings or make them develop a dislike for you. The speaker must also make sure that the images are not too disturbing. Also make sure any writing on the images or videos must be understood by the audience. It is important to not use a vocabulary that your audience will not understand. For me the hardest thing is to be aware of other people's view s on my subject because I get very focused on the point I am trying to get across and then I forget to look at my ethical responsibility which in basic terms is just to be aware of others feelings about all subjects and to take in to account that we all have different vocabulary.

Speech reflection

I went to church this week and our speaker used presentation media. It was helpful because it put emphasis on the main points he was trying to get across. One of the points was that we should help eachother feel worthy or in other words compliment each other so there was a clip from friends that played on the screen of them giving compliments and what it should look like. Another way he used presentation media was in a PowerPoint all the main points would show up on the screen. Overall it was tell a story show the point on the screen and then explain it again. I found the media presentation help me focus in on what he was actually trying to say. I would say that it would depend on your learning style whether the media presentation can be distracting or not. For someone that learns better visually it will be helpful to have the media presentation, but if listening is your best way to learn and things in front of you are a distraction then I would say it will not be helpful. In conclusion media presentation was helpful at church and it helps me regularly.

digital Slide Design tips

I thought that the tips about PowerPoint slides would be helpful considering that is what we have to use for our next speech. Some tips are to avoid using text or numbers as the main source of information on the slides because slides should be more visual. If you must use text use bullet points and give yourself a limited amount of points and stick to that number. Limit number of words for each bullet point that way you will not over use textual information. Make sure your font is large and clean that way your able to fit all the information, but your audience can still see it. Make sure your transitions fit in the the vibe you are trying to give off for the speech it is best if everything flows. Last but not least try to avoid special effects and use color well. Overall we want our slides to look organized condensed and to still be effective, so use the tips and your slide show is sure to be a success.

Intro and conclusion

For the introduction it is important to have an attention getter such as a narrative, a question, humor, state a statistic or anything along those lines. Then you must state your purpose and thesis which includes your subject and what you would like your audience to get from your speech. Now you have to make sure you establish credibility this will make your audience believe in you. Lastly is to preview main points this makes it so your audience has a sense of where the time they have with you will lead them.
Example:
Can I get a horay. Horay! Let me get a horay!? Horay! I still can't here you! Horay! (attention getter). This is what the starting line of the September 2012 Tahoe tough mudder sounded like. I had been working out with a trainer for three months to prepare for this eleven mile journey and it was finally happening.(credibility). This was an amazing experience and I would like to inform you guys what it was all about.(thesis and purpose) today we will talk about the history of the tough mudder, actually doing the tough mudder, and then I will share my personal experience.(preview of 3 points). Let's get started talking about the history of the mudder.(transition)

In the conclusion you must review main points, reinforce purpose, and provide closure.
Example:
Now that we have gone over the history of the tough mudder, actually doing the mudder, and I have shared my experience I hope that you all are able to better understand this amazing event.(review and purpose) next year when the tough mudder comes to your town maybe you will be the one yelling Hooray!(closure)

Speech buddy videos Chapter 9 and 13

The 9.1 video was about writing a successful introduction. In order for an introduction to be successful you need an attention getter, a purpose and thesis that is clearly stated, preview main points, and all of this together will make a good foundation for your speech. The 9.2 video was about conclusions and how a successful conclusion leaves the listeners with a good impression of the topic, reviews main points, and reinforces purpose, and provides closure. In order to have a successful speech the introduction and conclusion are very important. The chapter 13 videos were all on speeches. The first speech about techno was very well organized and presented great I had nothing I would change. I hope I can use his eye contact and pace just as well. The speech about digital cameras was again a great speech. The main thing I noticed is though you could accidentally change to a persuasive speech all three speakers did a good job just giving facts. The last speech about Kosher was well organized, but she needed to work on her eye contact, her pace, and it seemed as though she could have practiced more. Overall I thought the first two speeches were awesome and the third one just needs a little more work.
