Facts and Stats

According to the book the best time to use facts or statistics is "when making a logical appeal". I think that during a speech it is best to state facts or statistics when it enhances your point. If I was to say do not drink and drive it would be helpful to have statistics with graphs and such like the drinking speech buddy video did. Now if I was doing a speech on how to make cookies statistics are not very relevant. I think that it is most helpful to use statistics when trying to persuade or inform your audience. It is least helpful when doing a demonstrative speech. I think that facts are important in a demonstrative speech and less relevant when you are trying to persuade or inform because people do not need to know your observations from your own experiences they need to know the statistics that will convince them to do what you want them to; however, you can use facts always in your introduction because they give you credibility. Overall it is a personal judgement and facts and statistics will always enhance your speech if they relate correctly to your point.

  1. I like how you showed using statistics and facts with two completely different examples. On the other hand I have to disagree with using statistic in demonstration speeches. It may sometimes fall into place well, but nevertheless should be planned well. For example, while speaking about demonstrating CPR, it may be helpful to use statistics on how effective it is. There are also different techniques used for CPR, and statistics might help by proving which way is most successful. Besides that, I agree with using facts in your introduction. Some facts or statistics could be used as a grabber. I often start with a fact, statistic, or definition and base most of my speech off that.

  2. I definitely agree that charts and pictures do represent facts and statistics well, especially drunk driving because there is so much facts already out there its basically common knowledge. And your cookie speech example is very nice, I never thought about it like that. I was trying to think of something that doesn't use facts and statistics and I was thinking that maybe everything needs facts and statistics, but now that I think about it, cooking speeches and the like do not really need to have facts and statistics to back it up, unless you were talking about the history and how they originated.
